The ritual of Jagaddhatri puja (October-November)
Jagaddhatri puja is celebrated on the light ninth day (sukla navami) of Kartikk. Puja is performed in the morning, midday and evening, combining the celebrations of astami, navami and dasami into one day's ritual.
Calcutta notes on Jagaddhatri puja in Krishnanagar
The image of Jagaddhatri is coloured bright yellow or orange. Urban images are extremely large and extensively decorated with sola or daker shaj. The Jagaddhatri scene may have been taken from the Devi Mahatmya and represents the battle between Durga and Mahisha during which Mahisha assumes various shapes including that of an elephant.
Although an image is used in Jagaddhatri puja the Purohita Darpan mentions the salagrama stone and the ghat as an alternative media for worship. Puja starts with invocation and the samkalpa vow and the initiated worshipper and tantradharika are nominated. The pujaka sits in the asana and does tantric achamana. The ghat is established and Jagaddhatri's meditation done. The mental offerings are made followed by special arghya. Pitha puja meditation and visualisation come next. Invocation is made, the articles of worship are set out, fingers snapped and dasadigbandhana done with various mudras followed by consecration of the image.
