Levitating Still Life

Levitating Still Life oil on canvas 24″x20″ SOLD

This is largest still life I have done in oils and is based on the work of the 18th c Spanish artist Luis Melendez. It was painted over a period of two years and started in 2014. All the objects are from England. The pears are from my neighbour’s garden, the bread from a local bakery in Oxford, the pottery from Rye in Sussex and the basket made locally. the only think that is not is the wine. I have called it Levitating Still Life as things are just about to lift off and nothing is as it seems. I hope it creates a sense of stillness which is the purpose of all still life I feel. At the heart of my thinking is the work of Dali whose exquisitely created small still life of bread in a basket, one of his earliest works, creates this sense of making the ordinary extraordinary. So Spanish artists lie behind this work one way or another.
