This was a commission for a view of the ‘Dreaming Spires’ of Oxford. The only vantage point today is half way up South Parks. The aim was to provide a ‘from here’ ‘to there’ view which included the Victorian and Edwardian houses of St Clements in the foreground, the historic buildings of the University in the middle ground in amidst the trees and the hills surrounding the city in the background, as these are all part of the lived experience of Oxford. The cyclist looking out over the scene and the passing bus adds to this personal experience of the city and gives it a warmth with the golden glow of the Cotswold stone and sunlight touching here and there. The skyline could either be dawn or dusk and is designed to draw the viewer’s eye downwards towards the scene.
This is the framed painting in situ in Oxford.
