Calcutta Notes

Modern Kali image with shola decorations

15th September 1980

Shola makers from Ilambazar (nr Shantiketan). a.m. Kalighat kumars. Taken to see the shola makers putting shola decorations on the 3 kilo Durga image. Very elaborate backdrop. Bamboo leaf eyes but the usual lion (not Orissan type). The shola decorations were very much the kind used on the giant Jagaddhatri image.

A lot of Dakinakali (right foot, 4 arms, tongue hanging out) images, some old painted ones. Bamakali images I was told are used for other kinds of pujas. No Rakhakalis. Mrs Mukherjee told me that copper-coloured images are typical to Rani Rashmoni's family only.
