Building up straw and kathamo for Durga images. Chalchitra (I asked Profullo Pal senior) were in bangla style. Other worker, Moran Das, working on straw legs. Maharashtra Nibari on Hazra Road. Madrasis worship Ganesha today (8am-7pm) and for another 11 days. The image was set in a wooden pandal. The Kalighat kumars came to Cal before partition and were brought up here. a.m. Cal museum. Mahishamardini (terracotta) Kushana: right upper arm onto back of buffalo. Long sari. M (10th c AD) Manbhum W. Beng v. elaborate black stone. Upper right sword, arrow, thunderbolt, discus, trisula. Upper left bow, axe, goad, snake, shield and fork-like arrangement into Asura's right side of head. Asura-sword (right), shield (left). Right arm being attacked by lion. Lion moustache and crinkly hair (like Orissan style). 2 women w. chowries. Asura coming out of buffalo's neck. Buffalo's head below. The whole image is @ 3 1/2 ' tall & @ 1 1/2' in depth at widest point (the head and chest of Durga). Elaborate temple-like structure behind the composition. D-almost as tho' she is standing within the temple itself. Gupta terracotta (4th-6th c AD) stone (?) Mahisamardini (@7" tall) Asura/bull's neck grabbed by D. Rough image. 4 hands.
