Saraswati figure in Durga image during painting

13th November 1980

am Went with Shanu Lahiri to Viswa Bharati (and Prodip). Met the curator-Mr Samar Bhowmick-of the Rabindranath Museum. Bought a booklet on the Tagore family. Jayram Kushari (meaning?) was the ancestor- Tagore got the title 'thakur' later, JK from Jeshore and migrated to Cal in late 18th c. He was the landlord of Gobindapur-he bought the land from Gobinda Sadam Dutta and the East India Company bought Gobindapur from JK.

Temples-Triveni from 15th-17th c a centre of tantra and Vaishnavism (Basudeva temple-terracotta and Hanseswari temple-brick).

I was told that after Jp the women etc make dolls for the melas. These are made from small moulds (animals, babus etc) and painted.

Saw a really good painting in Viswa Bharati that depicts Dp and the sale of these kinds of things.
