Hatkola Dutta Durga image under construction

11th November 1980

am Dutta (Hatkola) for another interview with Bhavani Prashad.

Their old kumar's name was Hari Pada Pal who had 2 sons, one of whom, Kartik Pal, was big-headed and got dismissed from the service of the Duttas. Then their painter from Nabadwip introduced them to Suren Pal (Prodip's grandfather). Hari Pada Pal's grandson is Tarapada Pal who nowadays does the Dp for Dutta family who live nr Central Avenue-for Shamal Dhan Dutta.

Purusottam Dutta came to W.Bengal in 804 Bengal era i.e. 1097 AD (cf Indo-Aryans).

As soon as the Saraswati river dried up the Saptagram families moved to Calcutta (i.e. Seths, Mulliks etc) 17th c.

Gobinda Sadan (grandson of Kirshnananda Dutta-a contemporary of Caitanya, living at Andul- 1 hours train drive from Calcutta) moved from Andul due to family differences. Came to Gobindapur in 16th c cf Naba Bharat 1318 B.S. 29th Vol Magh ed.

Mansingha, Tademal, Akbar, Gobinda Sadan were all contemporaries. Is there a history of Laksana Sena?

1) Kali Prasad Dutta (@ 1801-3) built Kalighat mandir for Rs 30,000 which was a way of paying the brahmins to do his mother's shraddha. He did this on the advice of Ramchulal Sirkar who was the wealthiest man in Cal. RS was the sirkar of the Dutta family (cf Chatubabu).

2) Madan Mohan Dutta (b 1710-d 1787 1st April) lived in the other house belonging to the Duttas which is now demolished. This used to be in Madan Mohan Dutta lane and a thakur dalan existed there-in fact this was probably built in 1698 by Ram chandra Dutta when they moved.

Gokul Mitra (@ 1730s)-a contemporary of Raja Nabakrishna Deb (referred to usually as 'Munshi' rather than raja) cf 'Radha Madhan Mohun' a book belonging to the Mitra family who still live in the Chitpur Road somewhere near the temple. This book mentions that Kalighat mandir was built @ 1801-3 by Kali Prashad Dutta.

Story of Radha Mitra and the image (stolen from the Raja of bishnupur) of Madhan Mohun (i.e. Krishna). In the Dutta family- a) grihadevata (daily worship, regardless of pujas)-salagrama sila (Narayan) b) istadevata-Kali (apparently it's very rare to have durga or Jagaddhatri as istadevatas) c) gurukul (i.e. family of guru) teaches about istadevata and will give the mantra of istadevata.

Another name of Kali and Durga-Narayani. Gobinda Sadan had this tradition (which generally stays in the family) of having Gobinda (i.e. Krishna) as the grihadevata and Kali as istadevata.

Usually, beside a Kali image (somewhere nearby) is a linga. In Kalighat there's Nakuleshwar (Nakul=snakes). The sons of Madhu Mohan dutta built the Shiv temple on Nimtala Ghat St-Rashile Lal Dutta and Haralal Dutta.

When Kali puja is done in dutta family (begins at 8.30-11.00) next morning the worship of Shiv linga takes place.

Jogeswar (who must be present at sacrifice-Jog) i.e. Narayan. Present at weddings, deaths etc.

Lady Fanning wrote of Dp and Holwell "Interesting Historical Events' 1766. Also see William Carey for description of Raja Nabakrishna Deb's Dp festivities. Kalisingho-'Hutomer Naksa' for a comical interpretation of events.

Basanti puja is still performed amongst certain families in Cal and it is an exact replica of the autumnal puja.

Dp is celebrated in the Dutta ancestral home in Andul. There is a thakur dalan there but not sure when it was built.

The old image of Gobinda belonging to Gobinda Sadan was placed in the vicinity of Kalighat after the construction of Fort William by the flower market. Duttas follow Gupta Press for Dp cf Roy family.
